Unit of competency

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use critical thinking skills in a workplace context. The unit applies to individuals who evaluate existing or proposed work practices. These individuals typically develop or review processes, products, or services that may be proposed or already existing.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Establish role of critical thinking in workplace

  • Critical thinking is the process of analyzing and making logical deductions. Critical thinkers seek to understand decisions, actions, and the results of actions.
  • Use critical thinking practices to evaluate situations in the workplace

2. Lead critical thinking process

  • Consider competitive environment
  • Consider ability to produce good solutions
  • Consider ability to implement solutions
  • Consider structure of problem and its limitation 
  • Consider supporting factors such as organisational policies, procedures and guidelines

3. Develop critical thinking mindset

  • Review decision-making practices in the workplace
  • Seek input from stakeholders and colleagues on best methods for carrying out your job duties
  • Identify areas where self-development of your skills and abilities is needed to carry out your duties
  • Develop a plan for future process evaluations using both internal and external feedback, in order to ensure that the operations are consistently carried out to meet organizational standards

The project manager must identify, analyze and evaluate information during the planning process.

Writing

Writes documentation that communicates a plan clearly and effectively.

Numeracy

Analyzes financial data to project future market trends, resource allocations and business profits/losses.

Articulates ideas and requirements clearly and persuasively using techniques appropriate to audience and environment

Self Management

The role involves identifying implications of legal and compliance requirements related to own work, and making a range of critical and non-critical decisions, taking a range of constraints into account.

Planning and organizing

Analyzes information, identifies and evaluates options, and chooses most appropriate option

Technology

Use a range of digital tools to extract, organize, integrate and share relevant information.

Initiative and enterprise

Monitoring implementation of ideas and analyzing outcomes is a formal or informal process.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must be able to identify and address workplace limitations by using a variety of critical thinking techniques and question-asking skills; use various information sources in order to provide answers to proposed questions; develop a proposal for an issue in the workplace that is supported by first conducting research and incorporating feedback; and evaluate his or her own performance.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of legal and compliance requirements relating to business operation to be included in planning, including:

  • critical thinking concepts and the value of applying such approaches in a work environment
  • key characteristics of critical thinking processes
  • sources of reliable information relevant to workplace practices
  • key components of decision- making frameworks
  • features and limitations of workplace practices
  • legislative requirements relating to workplace practices
  • components of self-evaluation and development.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

  • As part of your role, you’ll collaborate with staff to ensure that appropriate resources are available for internal control procedures. You’ll also ensure that corporate governance documentation is up-to-date.

This unit should be assessed by anyone who satisfies the criteria for assessors laid out in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and standards.
